2017/2018 MOT Annual Training and Assessment

From the 1st May 2017, the second year of MOT Annual Training began. Last year over 99% of MOT testers completed the 2016/2017 MOT Annual Training and passed the MOT Annual Assessment. The remaining testers have been suspended from testing.
This blog will cover the changes to the 2017/2018 MOT Annual Training and Assessment.

2017/2018 MOT Annual Training Syllabus

For class 1 and 2 vehicles (motorcycles), the syllabus covers:
• body and structure (including security)
• assessment of tyres and wheels
For class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles (cars and other vehicles), the syllabus covers:
• assessment of tyres and wheels
• corrosion assessment (includes assessment of brake pipes)

2017/2018 MOT Annual Assessment

The new 2017/2018 MOT Annual Assessment will cover:
• Questions from the 2017/2018 MOT Annual Training Syllabus
• Questions from the 2016/2017 MOT Annual Training Syllabus
• Questions from DVSA Special Notices
• General MOT Questions

2017/2018 MOT Annual Training and Assessment Changes

• MOT Annual Assessment Pass Mark Has Increased to 60%
In line with DVSA’s plans to raise testing standards, the 2017/2018 MOT Annual Assessment pass mark has been increased to 60%. Plans are in place to continuously increase the pass mark for the MOT Annual Assessment up to 80% by 2019.
• Clearer Questions
DVSA have set up a new process to quality check all questions in the MOT Annual Assessment to ensure they are written better.
• Feedback
Once the MOT Annual Assessment has been completed, you will now be provided performance feedback on the specific areas of the test.

How to Record Your MOT Annual Training and Assessment Result

Once you have completed the MOT Annual Training you MUST complete a training log and keep this record with your proof of training on file at your MOT testing station. You should show this on request to DVSA, if asked during an inspection.

What you need to do, if you have been suspended from testing

If you were unable to complete the 2016/2017 MOT Annual Training and pass the MOT Assessment, you will have been suspended from testing. To start testing again you should:
• Complete the 2016/2017 MOT Annual Training
• Complete the 2017/2018 MOT Annual Training
• Pass the 2017/2018 MOT Annual Assessment
• Contact your local DVSA office and arrange a VT8 observation
