Awarded by the IMI, Institute of the Motor Industry, the ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Certificate is a recognised qualification by the DVSA/VOSA as the pre-entry qualification to MOT Testing.
Once completed, you will gain your ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Accreditation which is accepted as the first step in achieving your MOT Testers License.
The ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Course will develop your skills around vehicle inspection techniques and engine and electrical diagnostics. The ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Certificate is a recognised qualification by the DVSA. You will focus on all vehicle systems from steering, suspension, wheels and tyres, body, corrosion, vehicle and braking systems.

Who should attend?
Formerly known as the ATA Accreditation, the ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician course is for those who are involved in the inspection, maintenance and repair of light vehicles. We offer 3 different routes for the course, tailored to your specific needs:
- Assessment only
For skilled and experienced technicians who are of a standard to complete the assessment only with no training. The assessment can be completed in one day, subject to being of the appropriate standard.
Ideal for skilled and experienced technicians who want some brushing up and refreshing on key areas before starting the assessment.
This is our most popular option for technicians with 4 or more years experience, with good background knowledge. This fast track route is ideal for someone who needs assistance in specific areas of the Inspection Technician before undergoing assessment.
Entry requirements for the ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Course
For entry on to the ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician course, you need to have a minimum of 4 years’ experience in a working garage and a basic understanding of MOT testing. With the four different routes available, and courses running in our 3 centres every week, you can choose to study in a way that suits your requirements and availability.

You must successfully complete a range of practical and knowledge based assessments to attain accreditation.

Vehicle body and corrosion inspection

Finally pass an online Assessment
After completion of the course you will be able to calibrate emission test equipment before testing a vehicle, accurately inspect a vehicle, diagnose faults and correct repair requirements. You will also gain the knowledge and skills in the appropriate wiring diagram required for the electrical systems.
Successful achievement of the ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Certificate will allow for progression onto the MOT Tester Training Course.
